robberry
[non-executive director]
by lewin de villiers [executive partner]
There are certain people who are born to lead: the head prefect, the cricket captain and the MD. If I were a Marketing Director, I’d want Rob Berry looking after my business. I first met Rob in 1980 when he was head of client service at JWT. I was immediately drawn to his comfortable manner and insightful thinking; he achieves his objectives by asking, never needing to command. He’s easy to like – even by the creative department! In 1983 he was the driving force behind the establishment of Berry Bush, one of the Cape’s most successful agencies. The agency went on to achieve numerous creative awards, as well as Financial Mail recognition on a number of occasions. When BBDO returned to SA and bought into the Berry Bush Group, Rob became chairman of BBDO South Africa. The list of blue chip clients that entrusted Rob with their communication needs bears testament to the quality of Rob’s leadership. As a non-executive partner at ninety9cents, Rob’s mentorship and wisdom is one of the agency’s key assets. He is also one of my most trusted friends and I’ll fight for him in any trench, anywhere.
